Dr. Robert S. Schmidt is a double-board certified surgeon specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face and neck. A Delaware native, Dr. Schmidt received his undergraduate training in psychology at Duke University, graduating with honors. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He then completed a residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, Virginia.
Following his residency, Dr. Schmidt completed his training with a prestigious fellowship in facial plastic surgery awarded by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. These fellowships consist of one-on-one training with national leaders in the field and represent the highest degree of training available in facial plastic surgery.
Dr. Schmidt is board certified by both the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. He formerly was an instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the author of several articles and book chapters on rhinoplasty and facial trauma. He has presented his work at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Dr. Schmidt is a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. The AAFPRS is the world’s largest specialty association for facial plastic surgery with more than 2,700 members.
Dr. Schmidt believes that every person is entitled to personal, safe, and confidential care that maximizes his or her quality of life. He believes that medicine is a collaborative relationship between patient and physician. He values communication throughout the treatment process so that patients can share their needs, learn available treatment options, and confidently participate in the treatment process.
Dr. Schmidt believes that each patient has unique needs and develops individualized treatment plans to meet those needs. He strives to create harmony between facial features while optimizing form and function. Dr. Schmidt personally performs all invasive procedures and supervises the post-treatment process to maximize patient comfort and satisfaction.
Dr. Schmidt and his family live in Midlothian. He is active in the Duke Alumni Association and interviews local students who have applied for admission.
