This is a male in his twenties who disliked the appearance of his ears. He disliked that his earlobes bent forward. Dr. Schmidt determined that his earlobes not only bent forward, but they were much too large. Dr. Schmidt reduced the size of his earlobes and pinned them back at the same time in the office under local anesthesia.
He was very pleased with the outcome of his earlobes. They not only lie flat, but also they are smaller and more proportional to the rest of his ear. Post-Operative photos were taken five months after the procedure.
This is a 26 year-old male with 3/4 inch gauges in his ears. He desired removal of the gauges for professional reasons. The gauges were removed in the office under local anesthesia. For more on the technique, check out this blog post.
The post-operative photo was taken two weeks following the procedure. He was beyond thrilled with his new, gauge-free earlobes. He felt more comfortable with his appearance in a management setting.
This patient is a young old girl with protruding ears. She had began to become self-conscious about them after getting a sunburn on her right ear because it stuck out so much.
Ear pinning surgery or “otoplasty” is designed to set the protruding ears back closer to your head and create natural looking folds on the front side of the ear. This is done at a local surgery center under anesthesia.
Afterwards she loved her new ears! “Thank you, Dr. Schmidt, for putting lines on my ears.” While the right one still protrudes a little bit, it’s a significant improvement and a natural looking otoplasty result.
This young man had gauged his earlobes when he was younger. They were once large enough to fit a soda can through! He needed to have his earlobes repaired so that he could join the military. This procedure took less than an hour in the office. He is shown here after ten days when he came to get his stitches out.
This earlobe belongs to a 24 year-old lady who developed a keloid over a year’s time after her earlobe was pierced. While it was not causing pain, it was steadily enlarging. The keloid was treated by a series of steroid injections and massage. We then excised the lesion in the office. This is a six-week post-operative result. The appearance is excellent, and there is no sign that the keloid has recurred.
This patient suffered a torn earlobe. Earlobes can require repair if an earring has been torn through, or if a piercing becomes severely stretched out over time. Patients with earlobe gauges may decide to have them removed which would also necessitate repair. In this case, we repaired the tear by using a z-plasty. By interdigitating healthy tissue, we have a stronger repair than if the tear was simply sewn up. Dr. Schmidt routinely offers re-piercing of a repaired earlobe, anywhere from three to six weeks following the repair.
